Exploring the Field of Metallurgical Materials Engineering

The success of modern technologies is dependent on the availability of a variety of materials. Materials scientists and engineers design new materials with specific physical properties to serve engineering functions such as energy production, construction and protection, transportation, biomedical applications, and electronics. This field of engineering combines expertise in science fields like physics and chemistry with engineering techniques to develop, produce, and test new materials for technological use.


The metallurgical field of materials science and engineering includes extracting minerals from their natural sources, making refined metal products, designing processes to make these materials in an environmentally responsible manner, and testing the performance of these advanced materials. This interdisciplinary field of study merges with other disciplines like glass and ceramic technology, mineralogy, inorganic and solid-state chemistry, and polymer science to encompass all structural and functional materials.

Metallurgical and Materials Science Engineering Research

Metallurgical materials engineering students have access to state-of-the-art facilities in the College of Engineering including those for specialized metal processing, mechanical testing, heat treatment, chemical analysis, and microscopy. The department also has special equipment for rapid solidification, container-less melting, spraying of atomized metals, and an atomizer to manufacture metal powders for 3D printing of metal components.

During their MME degree program, students focus on developing an in-depth research project in a specific area of material science and engineering to advance the state of the art in a particular field. Research results are published and presented at conferences.
